Getting to know… Nicola Kirk Photography

Today we find out what makes photographer Nicola Kirk tick. From mountains to heritage fashion and plenty of tea…

Q. What makes you happy?

A. Tea. I drink a lot of it, I love to go to my parents/friends for a cuppa and a catch up. If I am editing a wedding, the kettle will go on! But outside of tea, I am happy when I am outdoors. Whether that is in the garden for a few hours or on a long Sunday walk.

Q. What does a perfect weekend look like to you?

A. A perfect weekend will normally involve a spot of gardening and getting the walking boots out for a wonder across the South Downs or along the seafront in Eastbourne. You can’t beat these incredible surroundings we have on our door step.

Q. What’s your idea of a dream holiday?

A. I am a big fan of a winter holiday – my husband got me into snowboarding not long after we met. So I do really like being wrapped up in all your warm snowboarding gear having a drink and chips on a mountain with a group of friends. So these are my dream holidays.

Q. How would you describe your personal style?

A. I am a huge fan of heritage style in fashion. Greens, browns and navy. I do love a peter pan collar and a jumper with skinny jeans and boots. Sadly, you will rarely find me in a dress.

Q. What three items would you take with you to a desert island?

A. My Polaroid camera, the husband and a two man inflatable dingy. I don’t think I would need much more when you have the blue sea and endless views.

Q. What do you love watching on TV?

A. I am a big documentary lover! Mainly crime oddly.

Q. Where’s your favourite place on earth?

A. Ooo that’s a tough question. My favourite place I have been is Croatia. We went when it was out of season, it was completely empty. The beaches were just perfect. We would just put our walking boots on and head out – have a swim and a cold beer in a small local bar. Heaven!

Q. What’s your guilty pleasure?

A. Sitting in the garden (when I should be probably doing something more productive) With a pot of tea to myself in the sunshine. Bliss.

Q. What’s your favourite film?

A. Another tricky one! I would have to say The Usual Suspects. Great story, clever twist!

Q. What do you love about wedding photography?

A. There are so many things I love about wedding photography – it is such rewarding as a job. You get to be part of a couple’s day from start to end. Documenting all of their moments that phones just can’t capture. I get to see people celebrating one of the biggest moments in their lives, the tears, laughter and joy. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Q. What’s your background?

A. My background is in art and design. I graduated from Bucks University with a degree in Exhibition design. I used to teach at Sussex Downs College in Eastbourne and have worked on some amazing productions, in both events and exhibitions. Being creative has always been in my life.

Q. What inspires you?

A. The things that I find inspiring around me are the local landscapes and the weather. I think we have a great mix of everything in this country, rolling hills, stunning seascapes and real variation of weather. We have a good mix of history, colours and architecture. These always keep me inspired to get the camera out.

Q. What’s your favourite food?

A. Sausage and Mash in a red wine gravy.

Q. How would you describe your interior style?

A. We have recently purchased a 1930’s house – a full renovation too. I love high ceilings, pictures rails and space. A good mix of old and new together. But mainly, natural light. Light, airy and not cluttered.

Q. What’s your moto?

A. It is not my motto but ‘Rome was not built in a day’ I refer to this when everything becomes busy – either with business or life and just remember that things do not need to be rushed. I like to take time with my work, making sure I am 100% happy with an outcome and that rushing in life is not always the best way to go about things. Everything does not need to be instant. Sometimes the journey is just as important that the outcome.
